GoldaLeah: There's *NO* war on Xmas!!!

Here's one very upset blogger telling us that the reports in the papers and on television are completely misleading.

May I roll my eyes? As if anyone could possibly miss Christmas...

We had to do an article on this for journalism class. Most people found that people are inured to Christmas and don't really care. But if you have to be PC for capitalistic purposes - well there's nothing to do about it.

Agreed, B4S: It's pretty hard to miss Xmas in the U.S.

My basic approach is to grin and bear it. Jews are very much a minority in the U.S. Unless we're ready to pack our bags and make aliyah (move "up"--from the same shoresh/root word as the verb "la-alot," meaning "to go up"--to Israel), we just have to accept the fact that the majority will, to a certain extent, have its way. There's no point kvetching (complaining) about Xmas being a national holiday when we know that, from a purely practical standpoint, 98% of the population wouldn't want to work on that day anyway. When someone wishes me a Merry Xmas, I just accept their greeting in the good spirit in which it was offered and wish the wisher a Happy Holiday in return. Some things just aren't worth fighting over. Efforts to pressure U.S. military personnel to become Christian are worth fighting over. Xmas trees on government property aren't worth fighting over--I can think of worse things, as I was saying. As a minority, we have to pick our battles carefully, for the sake of maintaining good relations with our neighbors. Sometimes being PC is a necessity.

Can we declare war on Valentine's Day instead? I always hated that one when I was single. Right back to grade school when the teachers were forcing students to give on to everyone in the class or none at all, and they'd still disobey just to not give me one. Not a one... Now that is a cruel holiday.

What an idiotic idea, to force kids to show affection at an age when they're most likely to be insensitive. That's just inviting cruelty.
